Westfield’s Green Building to be Relocated and Restored in 2026

Westfield, IN (September 24, 2025) — The Board of Public Works has approved a contract with Brandt Construction to relocate and restore the “Green Building”, the City of Westfield’s oldest commercial building, following a public bidding process. As part of the State Road 32 improvement project, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will cover 50 percent of the $2,393,000 project cost to move and rehabilitate the historic landmark, which was constructed in 1837. 

“As we move toward Westfield’s bright future, we cannot forget where we came from,” said Mayor Scott Willis. “This project completes the preservation work started by the previous administration and protects this piece of our history for generations to come.”

The City of Westfield will retain ownership of the Green Building once renovations are complete and will be maintained under the stewardship of the Westfield Historic Preservation Commission. While restoration is underway, the City will issue a request for proposals (RFP) to determine the future use of the building as a commercial space. Over its long history, the Green Building has housed The Old Corner Drug Store in the 1860s, Funderburgh Grocery, the town post office, Pickett’s Cafeteria, Erika’s Café, and most recently, Dance Innovation.

Excavation and concrete work are anticipated to begin in late October or early November 2025. Once Duke Energy completes the underground utility relocation, the building will be moved to its permanent location on North Union Street, just south of the Basile Westfield Playhouse, in early 2026.
