City of Westfield will acquire Wood Wind Golf Club

Westfield, IN (September 16, 2024) — The City of Westfield has announced its intent to purchase Wood Wind Golf Club, located near 161st Street and Ditch Road, and that it is officially under contract. This will make it the city's first municipal-owned golf course.

The 147-acre championship golf course was initially developed in 1990 by Ron and Gary Kern, well-known Indiana golf course architects. The course has seen significant improvements over the last few years, including the relocation, redesign and redevelopment of numerous holes, which were updated as part of the sale and residential development of a portion of the original course.

"There has been much speculation over the years about whether Wood Wind would remain a golf course with the residential development that has popped up," stated Mayor Scott Willis. "Since my first day in office, the new owner has pitched ideas to develop the course into a high-density housing development. The city purchasing the course ensures that it will remain a community asset for decades to come and the open green space the area offers will be preserved."

The Downtown Westfield Community Development Corporation (DWCDC) purchased the course for $3.1 million from Westfield Golf Club, LLC. This purchase includes all buildings on the grounds, the clubhouse and party pavilion, and site amenities, including two pickleball courts, golf carts, maintenance equipment, and furnishings. The pavilion can accommodate up to 150 people for special events.

"It's important to note that the course is generating revenue and will continue to do so in the coming years. The city will reinvest any profits back into the course for improvements and additional community amenities. It's important that we have a public golf course available for all residents and our school district teams," Mayor Willis added.

A Phase 1 Environmental Assessment and an updated survey were completed during the due diligence process. The DWCDC will close on the course by October 1, 2024.
